Twelve years have passed in the Foundation’s fight for bridging the digital divide. Great progress has been realized because of the strong support of the community and a great cadre of volunteers. Thank you all.

Computer Reuse Program: The MAR (Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher) program became available and RECA met the prerequisites (recycling history of 100 or more computers a year to the digital technology “have-nots”). RECA was one of the first non-profit organizations in the country to qualify for the program. Since January, 2003 nearly 200 Windows 2000 computers have been issued to low income families, people with disabilities, and non-profit agencies. Over 100 Beginning Computers were recycled this year to children and first time computer users. The Foundation received funding from Battelle, the Verizon Foundation, and Bechtel to provide scholarships for the Internet Ready Computers. Additionally, DSHS provided funding for computers for their welfare-to-work and foster kids programs.
Computer Repair: A much needed service of providing repair and maintenance of computers for low income individuals, non-profit staff members, seniors, and people with disabilities was expanded. Over 100 families were served.
RECA Foundation Mentoring Program: We have had many requests to expand our programs throughout eastern Washington. This year we were able to mentor the North Central Community Network in Wenatchee. They have duplicated our Beginning Computer and Internet Ready Computer Reuse Program in their area. We also helped Valley Community Networks get started as a non-profit to provide a Computer Reuse program in Walla Walla, Washington. Together we are trying to make sure that every child in Washington State has a computer in their home prior to attending Kindergarten.
Community Resources: For years, RECA and CBPIN have worked toward providing on-line community resources. This year, RECA committed to management of the 4People database for Benton and Franklin Counties. RECA obtained a VISTA – Diana Hauer - whose main responsibility is to populate the 4People resource directory with services in Benton and Franklin Counties. By the end of 2004, over 500 service listings had been posted, with over 42 volunteer opportunities and a special disaster preparedness section provided for each county.
